Pick the Right Primary and Secondary Categories

Categories tell Google what your business actually does and decide which local searches you appear in. The right primary category lifts the right keywords; secondary categories cover the rest of what you offer.

Pick the Right Primary and Secondary Categories

How to add or change your category

  1. Go to your Business Profile.

  2. Select Edit profile.

  3. Next to "Business category", select Edit.

  4. In the "Primary category" box, type and select the category that best matches your core service.

  5. Add additional services you offer as secondary categories.

  6. Select Save.

Best Practices

  • Pick the most specific primary category that exactly matches your core offering — not a broader umbrella.
  • Use secondary categories only for services you genuinely deliver. Padding them with unrelated terms can backfire.
  • Re-check categories whenever you launch a new service line or change your business model.

Your primary category is the single strongest signal Google uses to decide which Maps and Search results you show up in. Treat it like the headline of your Profile.

Secondary categories let you broaden coverage without diluting that signal. Together they should describe everything a prospective customer might call what you do.

A multi-bay shop that does brake jobs and oil changes set its primary category to Car dealer, a broad listing for inventory rather than repair. It dropped out of brake repair and oil change queries, because Google was matching a sales lot. SyncMyReviews kept syncing the Google reviews that described those brake jobs onto a profile whose service list was dealer inventory, so the reviews named work the primary category did not claim. The fix is a specific primary category, such as Auto repair shop, with brake and oil change services added as secondary categories — not a wider umbrella.

You're done when

  • Your primary category matches your core service exactly.
  • Secondary categories cover only services you actually offer.
  • The updated categories appear on your public profile.
